Friends of Mad River Update: Oct 2025

Hello FOMR, Happy Fall!

This is our October update:

As you are probably aware, this season’s habitat restoration work is completed! The project was to create a side channel upstream of the parking area at Carruthers, and it was a great success. Attached is a drone shot of the channel after being completed. Thanks to Laura Wensink and the NVCA for completing yet another milestone in repairing this section of the Mad River to a better ecological state!

We have some fundraising ideas in the works that I will report on soon, including: a) our website project is moving along; and b) in breaking news FOMR t-shirt sales are picking up at the Newsstand!! I am going to drop the remainder of the shirts off this week, so stop on by and grab one if you have not as of yet (nice stocking stuffer for holidays). Next up will be FOMR hats 🙂

Here’s the updates on fall volunteer opportunities and what’s happening:

  • FOMR Fall Treeplant: October 18th at Carruthers Memorial park. Sign up using this link, and stay afterwards for a tour of the completed restoration work!
  • A Fall volunteer live staking event will happen in November sometime. (Date TBD). We will install willow sticks into the new side channel stream banks.
  • We are looking for a site for the Spring Treeplant. If you know of any landowners with spots along rivers, creeks or wetlands let me know!
  • In coordinating alongside the website launch I have created a FOMR facebook group page. We need a landing spot somewhere on social media. Right now there are 3 members: me, Laura and my Dad. Join up here!
  • And if you have not seen it, here’s a great video of the restoration project to understand the science behind the work we have been supporting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRFq9l7e44k

Hope to see you all soon!
